Start Solving Problems

All of us have problems whatever our background, nationality and beliefs. All of us at some point have struggled. One of the skills that great men and women throughout history have is the ability to detect a problem and find ways to solve them. They have a burning desire to solve a problem bigger that themselves and the tenacity to undertake a mission that seems impossible to most people. The reason why a lot of us live mediocre and average lives is because we haven’t gone beyond solving our own problems. We wake up everyday thinking of what we can get instead of what we can give. We are obsessed with ourselves that we turn a blind eye on the bigger picture- our purpose. Great personalities like Mother Theresa, Mahatma Gandhi and Albert Einstein became who they are because of their contribution to other people’s lives. They went outside of themselves and sought ways to create solutions to problems. We may not achieve what they have accomplished but we can make a difference. I believe that we are where we are right now for a purpose. There are no accidents.

So what can we do? First, find a problem that you want to be solved. It can be global warming or poverty, etc. Then educate yourself in order to understand the root cause of the problem. The best way to solve a problem is to deal with it from the roots. Next, find people with the same stand as yours and start a mastermind group. “A cord of three strands cannot be broken” –what more if you have ten or more? A mastermind group is like a brain storming team. After gathering ideas, take action.

Personally, I feel strongly about our country’s financial illiteracy. So I started reading financial books and found a mentor. I also became part of a group whose mission is to spread financial literacy among Filipinos and the world.

Imagine a world where everybody assumes responsibility and takes action.

How about you, what kinds of problems are you dealing with right now? How many people will benefit if you have the solution to these problems? If it is only relevant to you, then I suggest you find a bigger problem.

My "Bakit List"

If there’s a “Bucket List” – a list of things we want to do during our lifetime (before we kick the bucket), I figured that I could have my “Bakit List” – the list of reasons why I want to be rich and wealthy or my purpose for money.

1.Treat my parents to a European tour

2.Treat my whole family to vacations in the Philippines and abroad (I have 7 siblings so this would require more funds, =)

3.Support more local missionaries.

4.Build learning and resource centers for kids that would provide free quality education (especially in Mindanao and other provinces)

5.Give out scholarship grants to poor but deserving students

6.Buy my own beach house (I love the ocean!)

7.Have my own beach resort.

8.Return to playing archery. I want to have my own shooting range and train archers who will compete in the Olympics.

9.Spend more quality time with my future family.

10.Contribute to a First-World Philippines.

Most of the time, we don’t get what we want because we don’t even know why we want it in the first place! So acquiring it becomes a difficult task for us. As Jim Rohn said, “The bigger the why, the easier the how.”

Take a few minutes and think about the things that you really want or your life goals. Now get a pen and paper and start writing them down. Then make your own “Bakit List” and list down the reasons why you want to have these things. Once you have it all down, map out an execution plan (with a mentor or a mastermind group. If you don't have one, find one!) and turn these into reality!

If your Bus Isn’t Moving, Walk.

You rode a bus and are excited to get home. You smile as you imagine lying in your comfortable bed and that luxurious bath you can finally take after a tiring day. Then the bus suddenly stops. You look out the window and see several vehicles side by side. You sigh and pray that the bus would move soon. Five minutes passed by then ten… still the bus won’t move. You turn to the driver and ask what’s happening. “Traffic” is the only response you got. Fifteen minutes turn to thirty… and that comfortable sleep and luxurious bath you were looking forward to fade away as you slowly doze off inside the bus.

I’ve seen this scenario a thousand times. Sadly, this doesn’t just happen on the road but with life. The bus is your job. You’re excited to get that job because you think it will give you the money you need to provide for your needs and give you a comfortable life. As time goes by, you realize you’re stuck. You know you’re getting nowhere but you choose to stay and hope that someday things will become better. I’ve seen smart and talented people waste their life working for a boss they don’t even like for a paycheck that won’t even give them a decent living. By doing so, they lose their most precious asset: time. But why do they stay? They stay because of fear. Fear of the unknown because they are used to the cycle of employment, any change may be risky. We were made to believe that having a job is our only choice. You may think that at least if you’re employed, you get benefits and insurance. That will all go away if you get fired or you’re company closes down. So what are you going to do to prevent that from happening? Here’s a suggestion: WALK.

Walking means to use whatever you have to move you forward. God gave man an amazing mind and unique skills. Learn to use these gifts. Instead of just staying in your job and fearing the possibility of being fired due to the economic crunch, do something about it. Grow yourself and develop how your mind works. If you do, you will realize that there are sideways and roads where the bus will never take you. Educate yourself. There are actually plenty of ways to get to your dreams. There are opportunities everywhere. You just need to train yourself. Use your two feet and start walking to see it. Your job alone will not give you the time and the finances you want. The possibilities are endless and you’ll find out that depending on your job is the most dangerous decision you have made. The time to act is NOW.
